P&P End of the Year Mix (Not hip-hop)

pigeon%21 P&P End of the Year Mix (Not hip hop)
Here is the Pigeons and Planes end of the year mixtape for music outside of the hip hop genre. Again, this isn’t a best of. Just some of the music that comes to mind when I think of 2008.

For me, the year was full of skepticism. After giving up on some of the over hyped bands of the past (e.g. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) I found it hard to trust the hype behind some of this year’s newcomers. 2008 is almost over and after months of having it shoved in my face, I still don’t find any value in No Age. I really wanted to like these guys. Oh well, there’s always 2009.

Instead, I’ve focused more on easy-to-digest music that incorporates elements of music such as melody and rhythm. I’ve become much more open to straight up pop music this year thanks to acts like Lykke Li who have penned pop hits that still maintain a certain weirdness to which I’ve always been attracted. Santogold and TV on the Radio both kept things interesting by drawing from all spectrums of musical styles and maintaining a distinctive sound.

Then there were bands that blew me away with great songwriting. Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, and Fleet Foxes all put together albums that are full of timeless songs that burrowed into my head and became a part of my every day life. If you were to listen to any of my mixes from 2008 it would probably be all over the place like this one. More than ever, I really have no preference in style. A great song is a great song, whether it’s done with an acoustic, electric, or some synths and a computer. As long as it sounds good.

Great mix! Give No Age another chance!

I can understand not liking No Age, it took me a long time but I eventually fell in love with Nouns. I also like Abe Vigoda- Skeleton which I think is much better than Nouns but didn’t get the same kind of press for the same kind of sound. I enjoy seeing musical regions going back to their roots and LA’s punk and shoegaze scene used to be great, I think help bring back that classic punk feel with still being current. With that said I do agree that this wasn’t rock’s best year but it still wasn’t bad. I’d love to see what your opinion is on my list:

What’s up yo? Yeah I don’t know. Sometimes I know that bands will take a while to fall in love with. With No Age, I never had that feeling. Honestly, it kind of rips me because I never want to be that person to be like “this sucks!” when a lot of people find value in it. I don’t want to do that. Even in the crazy noise rock bands of DC there are people that find real value in it, including myself. I just think the value some people find in No Age is for the wrong reasons. I think it’s a lot of hype. I think No Age themselves get it. I’ve read some interviews and background on No Age and I think they know what they are doing. Based on your comment, I think you get it too. Whatever, I guess it doesn’t matter why people like it. If you like it, cool. That’s all that matters I guess.

Ha, kinda drunk right now. Coming to conclusions as I go along. As far as your list, I think it’s cool. I’m not really into your top 3, though. I think Mystery Jets and m83 are cool, but they don’t do much for me. It’s stuff that is cool to listen to when someone else throws it on but never something I’d put in my headphones to listen to by myself. And Adam Green is a joke to me. I really like music that is either serious or fun and I feel like he tries to be make serious music that is subtly funny and smug. And after the Moldy Peaches (that was him, right?) I can’t listen to him.

Other than that, I think we have a lot in common. Alright, shit, maybe I should check the list out again tomorrow because I’m pretty drunk and listening to Bela Fleck on Conan right now. He’s nuts on the banjo. Thanks for commenting though it was def one of the more insightful comments I’ve gotten and I like that. Keep in touch for sure.

    Peace

Ya no, I get it. You mentioned Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah on your blog and I went through the same thing with them that you have with No Age. That’s why there’s so much music out there, everyone can pick and choose.

And the Adam Green thing I completely get, he’s a jackass and most people can’t stand him, I find it funny, and if it’s some consolation I can’t stand The Moldy Peaches or his first album.

Anyways thanks for checking it out.

Hmm it appears like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any points for inexperienced blog writers? I’d really appreciate it.
