Yeasayer – "Madder Red"

When I heard the song “Ambling Alp”, I experienced a wave of immediate excitement for Odd Blood, Yeasayer’s new album due to drop February 8th. I just got the chance to listen to the album, and I’m still trying to give it a chance after the initial shock of staggering disappointment. It’s not that the album is terrible, but you know how it goes when you hear the absolute best song of an album first. It’s like eating that great white first in a pack of shark fruit snacks.

There are highlights (other than the great “Ambling Alp”) like “Madder Red” and “Rome” that keep me hoping that the rest of the album will grow on me, but the majority of tracks are busy, rambling, and unfocused. Instead of flowing or marching forward, many of these songs flail around in a crowded room like drunk kids at a Girl Talk concert.
