Kellee Maize – "Start None"

missafly pigeons Kellee Maize "Start None"

Pittsburgh rapper (yes, the girl in that picture is a rapper) Kellee Maize has quite a loyal following. Last time I posted about her I got 96 comments. Yes, I checked, and yes, they were all from different, real people. Her brand of rap is way out there. Her subjects range from spirituality and astrology to government brainwashing – basically, things you expect to hear at a Phish concert from the dreadlocked white guys burning incense and refusing to wear shoes.

These are not things that you expect to hear from a pretty blonde PA rapper chick that goes in over Baltimore club influenced beats with a pop mentality. Then again, I’m not sure I ever expected to hear a pretty blonde PA rapper chick that goes in over Baltimore club influenced beats with a pop mentality at all. Kellee may not be for everyone, but try to apply your collection of stereotypes and you’ll end up really confused. Check her out.

Kellee’s got 5 “archetypes” and this one on that pic (Ms. Apocalypse) is the one that sings “Start None.” Just nod.

All the way from Austin, TX I’ve been bumpin her songs! She’s pretty fly! She has the flavor that can’t be touched! Spread the word.

  5. LALABIGCITYOFDREAMS says:

I’m in LA and Kellee fits right in here. I know this song is wierd because of the beat (i love the dub step) but she’s got other songs that may suit your palette. KELLEE MAIZE IS THE TRUF.

  6. LALABIGCITYOFDREAMS says:

also, amazing photoshop skills on that pic WTF!!!!!

  7. TJ says:

Kellee’s got a sick flow and her lyrics are refreshing compared to a lot of other music out there. Can’t wait til she does a US tour

  8. Cavi says:

DOWNLOAD!!!! Definitely out there but with a message and good flow and REALLY GOOD.

  9. Conner says:

Kellee is awesome. ALL of her songs and her lyrics are truthful and straightforward. She tells it how she is and her attitude is a good one. Keep on makin’ our spirits float with your musical soul food Kellee, and we’ll keep listening.

I have serious problems with your assessment of Kellee Maize. The things you complain about in your review are reason that Kellee’s fans LOVE her so much. People who are Kellee’s fans are (Like me) Bored with the usual Rap and Hip-Hop sex, drugs and violence and welcome Kellee’s esoteric topics. I didn’t even know who she was until I ran across her name on another site and curiosity got the best of me. I was amazed by the frehness and originality of her lyrics. At 47 I am amazed by finding ANYTHING even Close to being somewhat original!! As far as your slam against Phish…Maybe..Just Maybe that’s the type of audience Miss Maize is trying to reach!!

  11. B says:

ahh I just love Kellee. Even if you aren’t feeling what she’s talking about, you can’t deny that she has a tight flow, especially with Start None.

  12. Confusion says:

I’m not really complaining. I agree that it’s original. Just sounds like something a palm reader would be rapping about.

    Also I love Phish.

  13. Craig says:

    hahahaha

  14. OM says:

It’s refreshing to finally hear something that makes me want to spend my cash.

When You look at a pretty blonde girl, the first thing that comes to mind is not rap. I will give that one, but I feel thats her whole point when it comes to her image, style, mindset, and music. No one has gotten the same angel as Kellee and thats what makes her lyrics and style so unique. We all look for something different and with out differences between rappers than there really is no options for us to choose from. We always look for the next best thing for example auto tune, that got chewed up and spit out by the artists listened most today. Kellee’s music is not only original but its revolutionary so we should all pay attention to what she is saying and continue to support her other than listening to whack reviews from people that cant read between the lines of what Kellee is trying to tell us in her soul searching lyrics

  16. Confusion says:

Yeah guys. Dont listen to whack reviews. Just listen to comments on whack reviews. Thats what you should do. For example this review got chewed up and spit out by the comment section today. But the comments that lie within are original and revolutionary so listen to them. Also light incense and sit on rugs and dont wear shoes and hemps still cool and talk about souls.

  17. M Lynn says:

I thought the review was great, the last part in particular made me laugh and the whole thing sparked my interest. I visited her site and it looks like Kellee gives away her album for free on there, so it looks like her anticapitalist worldview (if I can oversimplify) isn’t just words.

  18. sapphicowl says:

Thanks for the drop. I’d never heard of her before. And it’s fairly obvious that a lot of the commenters are either brand new readers that did not look around the blog (seeing as how they thought you were dissing Phish) or can’t see the humor in this post.

Apparently, not enough people took a moment out to assess where you were actually coming from or to give the post a re-read. I thought the Phish-fan comparison was a compliment and that “check her out” meant it was worth a listen. Guess I was the only one.

  19. Rod says:

This girl is profoundly amazing. I have to agree that even if you don’t like this particular song, check out the rest of her album. I just recently downloaded her new album (finally!) Does she have any music videos out?

  31. georgia bicker says:

    shes so amazing

  32. guantanamera says:

  33. DZ says:

I absolutely love the messages that she sends through her song lyrics! Also if you get a chance, check out her music videos. They are very creative and unique a well.

  34. Francis says:

Personally, I think Kelly rips it.
And Conspiracy theories are nothing new if you listend to underground hip-hop.
    Immortal Technique
    Skitz
    Lowkey
    Canibus
    Professor Griff
    AKIR
    Dead Prez
    Ill Bill
    Mr.Lif
    etc, etc, etc.
They all dip their feet in the concept that everything the media feeds us is not true.
You’re really not helping your own case with all the stereotypes you’re putting out there. It leads us to believe that your not trying to “understand” the music, instead applying all of the stereotypes you could think of before even listening to it.
She’s no Jean Grae, but from a Blonde from PA, it definitely not what you’d expect.
    And that’s a good thing.

  35. Jessi says:

Start None is by the archetype Nakturnal Lady, not by Miss Apocalypse.

  36. Kate says:

Does anyone know if she has toured at colleges?
