New! Shyne, Rick Ross, K'naan & Will.I.Am & David Guetta

Let me start out by saying – don’t get your hopes up. I just wanted to share these before they hit the recycle bin.

K’Naan’s original “Wavin’ Flag” was awesome. It felt moving, inspirational, honest, and important. I’m happy that K’naan is getting international success with this World Cup/Coca Cola campaign, but why do they keep changing this song? Every time, it seems like their only goal is to take away a little bit of its original charm. Next version will probably feature that chick from Paramore and Bruce Springsteen. Oh well. I’m gonna stay rocking the original.

If you don’t know, here’s the short story. Shyne recently got out of jail, and the minute he got out, he was deported back to Belize (his dad is the prime minister there, but they don’t get along). Everyone was sad on some “laws apply to rappers?” shit. Thankfully, Def Jam stepped in and offered him a 7 figure deal. But uh oh, apparently while in jail, Shyne lost his voice, and it’s showing no signs of coming back. He sounds like he’s in need of an oxygen tank. (He used to sound like this) Not really sure what Def Jam was thinking.

And then there’s always some new Ricky. I don’t even know what to say about it. I think that may be the worst sign for a song – when there’s just absolutely nothing to say about it. It’s got Rick Ross in it. Ne-Yo is singing a chorus. That’s it.

Soo.. I just saw K’naan last night in Chicago.. I was sorta familiar with his music.. I liked Wavin Flag, but after seeing his amazing performance last night, I’m a HUGE fan now. Going on your recommendation, I prolly won’t dl this mix, I’m too in love with the original (and the celebration mix) to mess with it. I did find a remix that some greek hip hop artists did with his chorus and them rapping over it, which was quite interesting.

He did a sick 10 minute version of Wavin Flag, he started it Acappella, mixed with a story about the lyrics and then the band kicked in. He also brought out a 13 year old girl from Chicago who he saw on youtube doing a cover of “Fatima” to sing with him.

Side note:: Wale’s performance was very different without a band backing him.. I saw him last april with ucb, and this time around he had a dj.. I enjoyed it, but my brother who isn’t in to hip hop as much, didn’t like him as much.

Yeah, if I showed up to a Wale show and there was no band I’d be disappointed.

I wanted to add to this some statistics – rather chart listing on Billboard about K’naan’s Album and music. As of right now K’naan’s Waving Flag is listed #2 on Digital Song and the Troubadour Album is listed #3 on Digital Albums category on – The Album is also listed at #12 on the Rap Category. It is tough to stay on those numbers when you’re not an American icon so K’naan has some tough marketing to do to stay up there! Oh well, I hope his record label is up for this task. I wrote a piece on his success on my blog the link is here –

    Tell me what you think!
