Videos! Kanye West at Bowery Ballroom

Here’s footage of Kanye West performing last night at Bowery Ballroom in NYC. It was a surprise show, with tickets going on sale the day of the show for $100 a pop. Of course, Kanye made it worth it by bringing out a bunch of friends including Rick Ross and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. I would have liked to go just to witness Justin Vernon and Kanye West on the same stage. It still blows my mind that those two have teamed up. Hit the jump for more performances from the show along with a video of Kanye giving an intense speech at the bottom. He addresses being villainized, the media, the reaction to his album, and creating music. Thanks to iLLRoots.

PS: Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is out now. Buy it here, or get the deluxe edition here.

daaaamn that looks amazing. I’d easily pay 100 to see that show!!

Paid 100 to see Rage Against the Machine (along with wu-tang, cypress hill, public enemy and others) three years back at Rock the Bells in San Fran. This Ye’ concert would be a close 2nd to that Bells Fest for sure…

    Side note: Con,

Interested in starting a convo on the best concert you’ve ever been to and why? And, what’s missing from today’s concert experience/scene (see: lack of energy and laughable live show creativity: Cool Kids…)

not to start up that heated “Jimi Hendrix live” debate again, but I’m really interested to see what people are into for their live shows across the u.s. (and ze globe for that matter)

Hmmm best live show ever? I’ve seen Phish live a few times and even though I’m not really into their music as much anymore, there is nothing like Phish live. The atmosphere, the energy, the creativity, the talent – it was absolutely crazy. Years ago I went to a 3 day Phish festival in Maine called IT and it was epic. It was like half concert, half circus, but the atmosphere was just incredible.

Other than that…seeing Jay-Z was awesome, like a big party where everyone knew the words to every song. Muse was epic too. They just bring this level of showmanship and energy that is hard to match.

I definitely need to see Kanye West live. I also really want to see Wayne. Live shows are all about the energy, and I think that energy is created when you’ve got an entertainer/performer, not just a good musician, on stage.

Phiiish! I’ve wanted to see them live for YEARS just to understand what all the hubbub is about. (The closest I’ll probably get is Sound Tribe Sector Nine, not that it’s the same genre of music, but a incredibly talented and trippy jam band nonetheless).

I just feel like rock shows are faaar beyond what hip hop shows offer today (on average, but then, there’s spectacular productions put on by the superstar acts like Ye and Hova…). I would gladly go watch a relatively non-mainstream band like Wolfmother play live any day over a relatively non-mainstream rapper like Chip Tha Ripper, just because I know that Wolfmother (or a rock group) will bring that raw energy, and tear the roof down.

Considering I was raised on rock and roll, it’s probably a subconscious bias, but I wish more rappers and hip hop groups took on live shows with a band or let loose with more improvisation (like The Roots, or even how Wale started playing in front of a live band…)

With record sales plummeting as they are throughout the industry, musicians (from rock to rap) really need to focus on their live shows if they want to set themselves apart from the pack (see: Gwar- not that I like their music whatsoever, but they’re success is largely based on their outrageously over the top live shows).

concert experiences are pretty subjective and depend a ton on your expectations/hopes for a show. that said, i think it’s hard to match hip-hop shows in small setting actually. the energy of good emcee’s is devastating. wale, atmosphere chiddy bang, cudi and lupe all put on crazy shows, the last two especially. their passion is just so tangible in those settings and everyone goes nuts. jay-z and kanye just are so over the top with it, it’s staggering to see.

my three favorite shows all-time though are probably lcd soundsystem, cudi and then vampire weekend in that order. those three acts probably all had the most engrossing shows for me because of the crowds, my musical preference and the passion of the performers. vw really is surprisingly awesome live. apologies for the self-indulgently long post

God I can’t wait til there is info on the next Kanye tour, the Glow in the Dark Tour was one for the books! I am still mad that the GaGa/Kanye tour didnt happen, I had six floor tics for that- and individually they both had to be the best shows I have ever seen.
