And you thought Rihanna’s bondage-themed music video for “S&M” was provocative. Austra is the new electronic project from Toronto singer-songwriter Katie Stelmanis, who in the past has performed solo, as well as working with everyone from Fucked Up to Owen Pallett. “Beat and the Pulse” was released as a single last year, an icy six-minute synth-heavy track, with thumping drums, and Stelmanis’ haunting vocals which have already drawn her (favourable) comparisions to the likes of Fever Ray, Siouxsie Sioux, and Zola Jesus. This clip for “Beat and the Pulse” (which Pitchfork recently Playlisted) was directed by Claire Edmonson, and features a bevy of barely-dressed female dancers parading around Stelmanis. You probably don’t want to watch this video at work, but its dark eroticism fits the mood of the song perfectly. Austra’s full-length debut album, Feel It Break, is due out May 17th on Domino Records.
