Coldplay ft. Rihanna – “Princess Of China”

This collaboration between superstar stadium rockers Coldplay and pop queen Rihanna, which will be on their forthcoming Mylo Xyloto album (released October 24th), had been highly anticipated in many quarters, and now the audio has surfaced online, we can see what they managed to cook up together. “Princess Of China” starts with some interesting glitchy synths, but never fear, in swoops the all-engulfing reverb covered guitar and a big old drumbeat and as expected, Coldplay have produced another song perfect for their festival headlining, arena playing sound.

Chris Martin has called this his favorite song from the forthcoming album, but what do you think?

Not really feeling it. I think I’m very much attached to Coldplay’s old intimate yet sweeping sound that they had in Parachutes and A Rush … which they deviated from in X & Y (except Fix You) and later Viva.. which was quite different.

I’ve had a meh reaction for most of the releases from the album, especially Paradise which sounds like it should belong to Chris Brown rather than Martin. Ah well, here’s hoping for the best.

    i still think coldplay sucks.

I think they’re really good at what they do, but I don’t like what they do. But I guess that prob doesn’t matter when there are millions of people who do.

After listening to it via that link, I have to agree with Azhar. I ADORED some of the older Coldplay albums (Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head, X&Y), but thought Viva la Vida was OK at best. They’ve always had radio-friendly, soaring songs, but these songs just seem to suck ass now. They seem to be made FOR radio singles instead of just being great songs that also happened to be popular amongst the Top 40 crowd. I fear Mylo Xyloto is trending even farther down the shitty radio single rabbit hole.
