To me, Everything But The Girl are rock stars. It wasn’t until today, when they came out with new music for the first time in over a decade, that I realized that not everyone knows about them. I grew up with the duo thanks to my mom and godfather, and I guess it never clicked that they weren’t ubiquitous. I guess I just thought everyone grew up with EBTG. I was wrong. It just makes it crazier that I’m hearing about them again now, and it’s because they’re covering one of my own favorite bands.
“Night Time” was one of the easy standouts of xx, and although everyone heard their fair share of remixes and covers of The xx when their album blew up, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard someone make an xx song their own like this. The affecting minimalism and blank space is replaced by buzzing synths and muted strings, but despite the sonic changes you’re left with essentially the same song. It definitely helps that The xx and EBTG are very similar bands, when you get down to it. This cover’s been on repeat since I first heard it.
