Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” Reaches No. 1

It’s always interesting when a song like “Somebody That I Used To Know” comes around. We saw similar situations play out with “Pumped Up Kicks” and “Rolling In The Deep.” Gotye’s biggest hit ever is one of those tracks that creeps in and starts slowly spreading like an oil spill in the ocean, only with much less harmful results.

In July of 2011, the track reached No. 1 in Australia, and throughout the following months it topped the charts in Belgium, Austria, The Netherlands, Denmark, New Zealand, and other countries. After a swelling presence in mainstream America, the track finally earns it’s position as the No. 1 song on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Just like we saw with Snow Patrol, it’s never too late to have a big hit.

    Good analogy.

  • Rare

America is starting to realize that unique, catchy songs are the ones that thrive for more than a couple weeks, not 4-on-the-floor soul-sellers. Hopefully, we all start to see the emergence of better music on the higher areas of the billboard.

  • Confusion

Agreed. I hope the manufactured hits start to become a little less prevalent. As tired as I get of “Somebody That I Used To Know,” it’s good to hear something different doing so well.
