There was a lot going on at Governors Ball 2012: beer pong, lawn games, food trucks everywhere, frisbees flying, and lots of music ranging from Kid Cudi and Major Lazer to Modest Mouse and Built To Spill.
And then there was Fiona Apple.
Her performance was perhaps the one time during the two-day festival when everyone around me was captivated. Fiona quietly walked out on stage and asked the audience, “Are you guys getting enough of a breeze out there,” as if she could do something about it had we answered, “Nope, not enough breeze going on here.” It seemed unlikely that the powerful voice we were all familiar with could be replicated on a live stage, especially by the gaunt figure we were looking at.
And then Fiona Apple sang.
