Rihanna Asap Rocky Cheers and Jeers: What We Loved and Hated About the 2012 MTV VMAs

Unfortunately, the Pigeons & Planes team was wayyyy too busy to attend MTV’s Video Music Awards this year. Instead, we watched from home and emailed each other about what we hated and what we loved while we ate and drank like gluttonous slobs. When we judge the VMAs, there is no in between—it’s all cheers and jeers. Here’s what we thought, unedited and straight from the emails.

What I hated was the categories “Most Shared Video” (or whatever) and “Best Video with a Message”.

Now, I don’t hate the categories, per se; I just hate who won. Rise Against deserved Best Video with a Message last year, and they lost to Lady Gaga (whose video was about a frickin’ alien birth) and they lost again, this year, to Demi Lovato. I know it’s the fans’ choice, but it’s just so disheartening that people aren’t paying attention to people who are actually saying something and telling a legitimate story about bullying with their video. Good for you, Demi, but you didn’t deserve that award.

Secondly, the “Most Shared Video” thing was about a video that was shared, remixed, covered, etc. Naturally, you’d think it’d be Gotye or Carly Rae Jepsen. NO! They actually came in 4th and 5th place behind One Direction, Justin Bieber and Beyonce. One Direcction won. Seriously. Come on, son. MTV should’ve just handed that Moonman to Gotye rather than opening that category up to a fan vote. He frickin’ has a video on his YouTube featuring all of the covers and whatnot.

I hate the VMAs man. Total popularity contest. And it’s not like the Grammy’s or any other award show is any better. I’m here for the performances, and many of those were lackluster too. It’s just a very awkward time in mainstream music right now, to me. Sorry if I sound pissy.
