MUNCHI1 Munchi Speaks On Azealia Banks and the Esta Noche Situation

Yesterday, a war of words occurred on Twitter. Azealia Banks is no stranger to twitter beef, but this situation was a bit different: the dispute was over her track “Esta Noche,” which was featured on her Fantasea mixtape and was supposed to be released on iTunes as a single. The friction started when Munchi got word of the single’s impending release, with artwork ready to go and plans to shoot the video for it in Paris without him being in the loop. It appears as though there were attempts at negotiating a contract, but with the words on twitter intensifying the situation, all plans for the release have currently been dropped.

Complex has a rundown of some of the tweets Munchi and Azealia exchanged, with shots thrown both ways. We’ve received an official statement from Munchi, which we are publishing untouched. Banks’ team was contacted but have not provided any comments.

So just to be clear, it’s OK for him to use Claudja Barry/Montell Jordan’s music with their consent, approval and creative involvement, but it’s not OK for Azealia Banks to rap over his remix and put it out on a mixtape? It’s then offensive for her label to offer him a music video, a credit, cash payment and international release & exposure to put the song out officially?

    *without their consent

Also, she’s desperate to hop on the Moombahton hype, but he’s not? Alternatively, she’s desperate to use others’ work to make her own, but he’s inventive and creative? Isn’t he the desperate one hopping on Claudja Barry/Montell’s classic to try to go viral/resonate? Pfft. Finally, his shitty moniker is all over the artwork, so, what other credit did he want? For real this dude sounds unbalanced as hell.

Fantini, this man was responsible for most of the moombahton hype, he didn’t hop on it. Check out his tracks and you’ll find some of the most innovative stuff out there today, using his influences from reggaeton to breakcore to create something that wasn’t there before. And there’s definitely a difference in making your own edit for dj sets and an official release without his consent.

Well the question isn’t “was it OK for her to use it on the mixtape” – the question only arose when she wanted to use it as a single without his consent. The Montell Jordan sample is pretty blatant, and I believe they’d have to sort out publishing and such for that instance as well.

Daniel, I get that he is important in terms of Moombahton, but it seems silly for him to harbour some notion that it’s OK for him to do it, but not for other artists. Considering the artwork credits him as featured and her team were obviously in contact with him negotiating his compensation (as he himself said, the label people were trying to make it happen, negotiating with himself plus Claudja & Montell’s publishing etc), so it’s not like they were secretly going to release it and cut him out. The official release was entirely in his benefit – money, exposure, free music video, etc.

i think you might be confused. munchi wasn’t aware of this being released as a single until after the artwork and announcement were mentioned, not before. the negotiations regarding publishing and contract didn’t happen until after word got out about this being released via itunes as a commercial single.

Would Interscope really be dumb enough to put a song up for an official release on iTunes without having taken care of the legalities? I really don’t think so. Maybe they were clearing the samples he used first, before getting to him, something like that.

    Damn Fantini, dickriding Azealia much?

  • khal

Would they be dumb enough? Probably not. I don’t think this happens a lot – but it looks like it’s happening right now. I’d assume most of these negotiations happen well BEFORE a release date is set, right?

    @ fantini
munchi was one of the ppl that made moombahton what it is today. he respected montel jordan by not making it an official relaese and just played it in the clubs. azealia on the other hand, took MUNCHIS remix, which is completely different than montel jordans original, and made her own track out of it then proceeded to release it without telling munchi. his name wasn’t even mentioned. and yes azealia banks is trying to hop on the moombahton wave, only good song she had was 212, which was originally a house track by lazy jay that she used. seems to me shes made it a habit to use other ppls tracks.
