Will Lupe Fiasco Quit Rap?

lupe fiasco Will Lupe Fiasco Quit Rap?

Following the murder of 16-year-old Chicago rapper Lil Jojo and the controversy surrounding remarks by rivals Chief Keef and Lil Reese, outspoken Chicagoan and celebrated emcee Lupe Fiasco took to twitter to express his frustration and announce his retirement from rap:

Lupe’s stream of tweets was seemingly prompted by continued brazen remarks from Chief Keef:

Though Lupe has promised retirement in the past, the circumstances add weight to this most recent pronouncement. Lupe clearly aches for his city so embroiled in fatal violence, as can be seen in the video below wherein the rapper revisits an early appearance on MTV that depicted his home neighborhood on Chicago’s west side.

Lupe’s grief and frustration are understandable; here’s to hoping that he uses his considerable platform and talent to continue shedding light on the tragic violence befalling one of America’s great cities, whether he hangs up the microphone or not.

It’s sad that emcees like Chief Keef who can honestly be found a dime a dozen rapping about the same stuff they don’t like can cause us to lose a unique, outspoken and inspirational one in Lupe.

Looking forward to this album even more as it might be the last we hear from Wasalu in some time. Heard the American Terrorist Pt 2. track that he sent his blogger friends. Really good song. Lupe flowing on dubstep is always great.

    lots of respect for lupe

The amount of respect I have for Lupe is up there with some of the most inspirational people I look up to. Chief Keef is being disrespectful as fuck and he looks like an absolute idiot right now. I really hope he comes to the realization that we’re living in 2012 and this is ridiculous.

Someone please tell Chief Keef that throwing around taunts and threats on Twitter doesn’t make him hard; it makes him look like a 12 year old going through her first period.

It’s a shame that with the insane amount of gun violence in Chicago this year, someone with at least a little ability to sway public opinion is using his voice to promote violence against arguably the most socially conscience rapper in the game right now, instead of trying to deter anymore needless violence.

I feel his frustration. You try so adamantly to actually say something meaningful with your music, and a lot of the–for lack of a better word–dreck constantly gets celebrated.

Hopefully he won’t quit. He’s one of the few mainstream conscious rappers out there right now. Rap kinda needs him.

i hate lupe. i hope its last.

I hope he doesn’t quit, he’s one of the only doing it right now with a consciousness to his flow, and more than just making music I feel like he’s doing the public a service by bringing some of these issues up in his songs. A dude like him has a lot of influence, and a lot of people listening to his albums, because he does have the occasional radio hits.

Lupe thinks he is too good for hip-hop, and he very well might be. If he is as self-righteous as he proposes, then he should be a great civil activist. I hope this is the case. I didnt fuck with this Lasers because he did it for the label, and his recent conscientious subject matter has sounded preachy. it feels like he needs a change and this could be the answer. imagine Lupe as a civil activist! dope!!!

Well I don’t think lupe is going to quit rap. When any rapper claims there going to “quit” they really mean they want more money but, If lupe really stops raping beacause of a Chief Keef I might have to stop living.
