Since the dawn of theatrical performance, costume has played an integral role in the artist’s ability to assume different roles and identities. The simple use of a mask or face paint could transform a man into a god, a demon, or a cat. The logical conclusion of costumed theater, of course, came in the 1970s with the arrival of Kiss and the blessed union of god, demon, cat, and whatever the hell Paul Stanley was trying to be (a star over your eye? are you a space pirate?).
Though Kiss may have reached the mountaintop when it comes to dress-up glory, other worthy artists have also donned makeup, masks, jumpsuits, disguises, and buckets in order to continue the great traditions of ancient theater. Thank you, Insane Clown Posse, thank you for your continued contributions to the Western canon. In honor of Halloween and without further ado, here are 20 artists who perform in costume.
