Rejjie Snow Says He Is Captain Murphy

We’re getting just as tired of the Captain Murphy speculation as you are, but it may finally be at an end. Tonight, P&P’s Monster received an e-mail with the subject header “captain murphy” and the following message:

“my boy uploaded this on my youtube channel
how did you guy’s put it all together ?”

In the video below (also sent in the e-mail), Irish rapper Rejjie Snow – formerly known as Lecs Luther – claims to be the voice behind the mysterious Captain Murphy. Aided by a can of beer, the smiling Snow states that he has been working in Los Angeles with Flying Lotus and others for the past ten months, assembling a project under his primary moniker and, apparently, putting together the handful of songs attributed to the enigmatic Captain Murphy.

As you may recall, P&P listed Snow as one of a number of potential artists behind the Captain Murphy alias. We reached out to Snow via e-mail, and he responded, “Yeah I’m Captain Murphy lol you can run a story if you want man,” adding, “I’m only gonna leave that YouTube video up for 2 days :)” in a later message.

It’s difficult to know exactly what to believe in this saga and we have not received confirmation that Snow is Captain Murphy from any other source yet. Given the nature of some of the players involved (and that Snow has allegedly been in touch with Earl), it wouldn’t be surprising if Snow indeed turned out to be Murphy, or if this video was simply another step in a sort of practical joke orchestrated by multiple artists. Of course, it could also be some serious trolling by the young Dubliner–especially considering Snow had some choice words for the piece in which we mentioned him as a possible candidate via his Facebook account:

We’ll keep you posted if other information arises.

UPDATE: It appears we have been trolled, unless we are being double-trolled with some kind of Inception-like troll within a troll. It looks like this was just for some publicity or simply for the sake of trolling, but either way, well played, Rejjie Snow.

I was pretty damn sure it was him. Only found out about captain murphy today but straight from hearing that fly lo song i was thinking ‘sounds heaps like lecs luther’

  • randomxette

    Wow! You guys rock!!

  • Ellis Dee

This seriously lowers my appreciation of this blog.. This dude is obviously trolling for publicity.

“Someone claiming to be the captain? Great Idea. Maybe now you can get some more followers.”

  • Krilla

I’m 50/50 on this guy….. Captain Murphy’s twitter is confusing

Seeing how he has to look at his computer to remember the name of Captain Murphy’s songs, I doubt this dude is telling the truth

  • Nigel

if you look at Rejjie’s twitter, it’s just a bunch of retweets from his fans talking about how surprised they are. I think it’s a hoax for publicity, because for everyone who doesn’t know who Rejjie Snow is will just look up his music and see if they notice any similarities or just to make themselves believe they are listening to more of Captain Murphy.

I’m sure Captain Murphy isn’t just one guy. It’s probably a few guys including FlyLo.

I can’t believe people are buying into this ‘who is Captain Murphy’ bullshit. Cheap ploy for publicity, and pretending to be him is even cheaper when your clearly not.

@Rob HM I can definitely see how you’d think it’s a cheap ploy for publicity. I haven’t decided yet. I think there’s something interesting about separating the music from the people behind the music.

It’s been done for years and the only thing that makes it seem “cheap” is the involvement of the Internet, social media, and Captain Murphy really pushing to perpetuate the speculation instead of just letting it be what it is.

In any case, it certainly isn’t as cheap as Rick Ross pretending to be a drug kingpin.

  • Confusion

Or maybe we’re just perpetuating all the bullshit because we want attention because we’re Captain Murphy.

  • Jon Tanners

I’m Captain Murphy! No I’m Captain Murphy!

  • Rob HM

@Confusion Don’t get me started on Ross! As for Captain Murphy, if nothing is revealed in the near future, people will soon lose interest in this fickle internet era. It will be interesting to see if it is an Oddfuture associate, given I lot of people are saying they love Captain Murphy, but hate Oddfuture!

I will say I’m a bit surprised people are dealing so negatively with this whole Captain Murphy thing. I understand the fatigue, but I’m always a little perplexed by the whole “we don’t give a fuck who he is it’s just a publicity stunt let’s hear the music we only care about the music!” I understand that perspective too, but I think part of what makes Captain Murphy alluring is the sense of mystery. Not some stupid omg the Weeknd he doesn’t show his face he’s so enigmatic shit. It almost seems like performance art at this point: The mystery, the trolling, the different people involved, it feels like a commentary on the way we digest music and search for meaning constantly (only to deny that we actually search for meaning). I dunno I’m getting too pseudo-philosophical for a Saturday afternoon. I just think Captain Murphy–whomever he is–plays very much the perfect product of the environment he/they/it is inhabiting and captivating right now.

    hes double bluffing

  • khal

people care b/c there’s a mystique and the people Murphy is associated with (FlyLo, Odd Future, etc). it’s like a built-in fan base.

that said, i am not Captain Murphy.

  • Michell

    Yes you are.

Now that we know who Murphy really is, do you think it changes some peoples minds about it? Maybe people were getting pissed at the off chance that it may be some rapper they never heard of, and now that they know it’s FLYLO, a respected established artist they have an understanding of, they accept it a bit more. Some may be pissed it sounded like Tyler and wasn’t. I for one think it was a great way for Lotus to introduce his rapping. Why not? We don’t know him as a rapper, maybe if he came out the gate with ‘lotus flowing over lotus’ not many ppl would care. But he understood how to build speculation and thus build publicity, without a major label or PR firm or publicity team. I give him props. And, based off Duality, he can rap like a mufucka. This is not a new idea *cough DOOM*. But dude played it off so good and didnt let it linger so long people gave up interest. I think this gives FLYLO points as not only now being a good MC, but a great business minded musician.
