For decades, authenticity—or a lack thereof—has been a topic of conversation in hip-hop. Sometimes things get morphed into this game of Who’s Really The Realest and other times artists get away with selling some truly absurd and inaccurate stories for the sake of a more marketable image.

Drake’s new song is called “Started From The Bottom” and it’s a continuation of the long and frequently told tale of finally making it. Plenty of our favorite rappers have shared similar sentiments on some, “finally here, finally rich, ashy to classy, made it through the struggle, me and my team, on the top, et cetera, et cetera,” but the issue that people have with Drake’s new song is that they aren’t buying it. Before he ever made it in rap, Drake was getting that Degrassi money, and being a young Canadian actor doesn’t mesh well with the usual tough stories of drug dealing and violence and the projects.

So here are 20 people who are really mad because they don’t believe that Drake really started from the bottom. Do we care? Should we care?

DRAKE’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION, HOUR BY HOUR

All of this reaffirms what Drake said in his letter though. People think he bought his way into fame, but by start for the bottom, no one should assume money. The bottom was that he had to create his own buzz with two mixtapes prior to So Far Gone that most people dont know about. He had to overcome the doubts of being a tv actor and turning into a well respected rapper n overcome the “wheel chair jimmy” label. The bottom isa place where noone believes in him. Hes basically saying he became famous and gained everything he has the same way most rappers have these days. Through hard work. Just b/c he wasnt poor doesnt mean it was easy, and by the looks of these tweets, not being poor could make it harder to be taken seriously.

I find it funny that rappers lie about how many cars and girls and stuff they have, and how many people they killed, and how much ‘weight they used to move’ all the time, but whether or not Drake was privileged as a child is a serious issue. Canadians just can’t win, can they?

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ is right! Nobody wins ever! Life is a big lose-lose situation! Sometimes I feel like we’re ALL Drake, in a way.

Fourth tweet takes the cake–”bottom of the upper middle class” ha ha

  • Antoine

I’m confused about all those tweets, probably cause i’m from Europe. But how is being from Canada a proof you’re rich?

  • Rook

The term “bottom” is metaphorical in the song. In order to excel at anything you have to start at the preverbal “bottom” . People are idiots.. Why does Twitter still exist? Obsolete.

Drake is an easy target so yah

  • EBeezy

Drake can’t win lmao. I don’t think he means he started out in the ghetto and poor. I think he means as Devin said he created his own buzz. When Drake first started nobody knew who he was outside of Canada even though he was on Degrassi. I hadn’t even heard of Degrassi and I had both of his mixtapes before he signed to YM.

I don’t get it, where has it been proven drake was rich? Cos he’s jewish? Old mixtapes, (and current album) he talks about how broke he was. how he had 2 steal his mothers debit card or “account’s in the minus” lol the funny thing is when people hate drake actually cares.

i feel like the song makes perfect sense if you listen to drakes lyrics.. much like everyone stated above, he had to work hard to get to where he’s at.

people want to take shit literally when they want i guess.

we should be happy people are at least listening to the lyrics i guess, even if they aren’t able to comprehend them
