A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the old saying goes. But what happens when a single picture takes all those words away? It’s been 33 years since John Lennon was shot and killed in December of 1980. Despite the passing decades, the image of his bloodied glasses (above) from that fateful night still carries a very powerful message.

Yesterday Yoko Ono used that image and its message to show her support for gun control via Twitter. Along with it she wrote, “Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the USA since John Lennon was shot and killed on 8 Dec 1980.” She also tweeted, “31,537 people are killed by guns in the USA every year. We are turning this beautiful country into a war zone.” The date would have marked her and Lennon’s 44th wedding anniversary.

This same image was used for the cover of Ono’s 1981 album Season of Glass.
