As the lead up to Danny Brown‘s hotly anticipated new album Old kicks into gear, it looks like the animated Detroit emcee is ramping up his output–and, as usual, he’s rolling in from left field with something a bit unexpected.
On “Hail Mary,” indie rap favorite K. Flay enlists Danny’s help to absolutely pulverize a slinky, buzzy electro beat. It’s a Danny we’ve come to know well, volume and energy turned to 11; it still works in technique and the visceral response it elicits. So little in rap sounds like Danny at his manic best, unhinged and stabbing the beat with each syllable. Incongruous as the pairing might seem, the production is well within Danny’s wheelhouse and, not to be completely outshined, K. Flay delivers a sultry, intriguing performance to boot.
Check out “Hail Mary” below and, as a bonus, listen to another recent Danny Brown feature on rapper Cassow’s “Oh Lord” (complete with a stomping, synthy monster of a beat well equipped for Danny’s high energy flow).
