MGMT Announce Details of New Self-Titled Album and Tour Dates

MGMT have announced that their third studio album will be coming out this fall, and there will be no return to the easy radio hits of Oracular Spectacular. The duo, Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden, announced today that they will be releasing a self-titled record on September 17 through Columbia. This album features only them on the recording, sans a full band like their last release Congratulations had. The single they released for this year’s Record Store Day, “Alien Days,” will be included on the album.

Earlier this year, the two spoke to Rolling Stone and set a tentative release date for June, but it looks like that estimate was a little early. Goldwasser and VanWyngarden have claimed that this record will stray far outside of Top 40s territory, citing Aphex Twin and house music as influences. After Congratulations, who knows what that will sound like filtered through their sonic lens. They recorded the album with producer Dave Fridmann at his upstate New York sTarbox Road Studios.

Other track titles discussed so far are a  song called “Mystery Disease” and “Introspection“—a cover of a song by a Long Island ’60s band with a cult following called Fain Jade. The duo are also reportedly working with director Tom Kuntz—who directed “Congratulations”—to create videos for “Your Life is a Lie” and director Sam Fleischner will be shooting visuals for both “Alien Days” and “Cool Song No. 2.”

In conjunction with the album, there’s a feature called “The Optimizer” that they’ve prepared to help enhance the visual experience that listeners have with the album. The program includes video & CGI work by Andrew Benson, Emilio Gomariz, Geoffrey Lillemon, and Chris Timms and will be available in enhanced album packages. The live show video coordinator that the group has used in the past, Alejandro Crawford, directed the component and it’s described as “a simultaneously aural & optical listening experience.”
