Deafkid – “Horns”

Deafkid are a duo made up of Flo Sauvaire and Chris Lockington, former members of Ghostpoet’s backing band, and creators of wonky, experimental pop music. ”Vigilante,” the first song we heard from the duo, was a jerky, frantic, sub-3 minute storm of rattling drums and elastic basslines, whereas “Horns” is a much gentler, smoother affair, which builds and builds with rolling layers of sound suddenly giving way to bright synth washes and pounding drums.

The song’s uplifting final third provides a surprising counterpoint to the “what the hell is going on?” refrain of the first 3 and a half minutes, and once again sees Deafkid managing to fit a wide variety of sounds and textures (including some beautifully subtle bird noises) into a single song, without ever losing focus or cohesiveness.

“Vigilante” and “Horns” will be released as a double A-side 7″ on July 15.
