Even if You Don’t Speak Icelandic, This Samaris Song is Beautiful

I’ve been sitting with this song for about two weeks, hoping that if I just keep listening, somehow these words will sink into the little crevasses of my brain that control basic understanding of language and somehow start to make sense. The song is called “Góða tungl,” and according to Google Translate that means “good moon,” but beyond that the words mean nothing to me. The press release says that “the lyrics are culled from nineteenth century Icelandic poems,” but I’m starting to realize that it doesn’t even matter. This song is one of the best things I’ve heard in a while.

Samaris (Þórður Kári Steinþórsson, Áslaug Rún Magnúsdóttir, and Jófríður Ákadóttir) are releasing their debut album on July 30.
