Grimes Responds to Accusations of Trolling Boiler Room

Earlier today, Grimes played a Boiler Room DJ set in Ibiza at the house party of pioneering techno artist Richie Hawtin. Before the set she tweeted, “Pissing off all Djs by playing t swift on boiler room tune in!” and she did just that, but not only did she play Taylor Swift, she also included Venga Boys, Daddy Yankee, and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You.”

If you’ve followed Grimes over the years, you know she’s got an affinity for mainstream pop music—she once called Psy a genius—and a deeply seeded appreciation for Mariah Carey. Still, playing this type of music at a Boiler Room set at the house of an electronic music legend seemed like a move designed to ruffle some feathers. It’s textbook trolling, especially since Grimes did this knowing that she’d piss people off. There’s nothing wrong with a little trolling, and in this scenario it was hilarious to see how people reacted, but Grimes has responded to the backlash and she insists that her Boiler Room set was not a case of trolling. If we didn’t know any better, we’d think her response was another case of trolling.

I think she played that set knowing not everyone would like it, but I dont necessarily think she was trying to get a rise out of the crowd in a negative way

Trying has nothing to do with it. Grimes has performed on boiler room before. She knows the deal.

I reckon it was a troll, and that richie, as well as the boiler room crew were in on it. Or they didn’t really give a crap, because c’mon. It’s a private pool party at a villa (that just happens to be broadcasted and features epic musicians.)

Either way. None of those people are gonna lose any sleep, or any money over it. This is just marketing. Nice one!
