Kendrick Lamar Explains His “King of New York” Lyric

Kendrick Lamar 600x400 Kendrick Lamar Explains His King of New York Lyric

A couple of weeks ago Kendrick Lamar had the rap game buzzing after his verse on Big Sean‘s “Control,” during which he not only named the names of his direct competition, but more controversially called himself the “King of New York.” Reactions were varied, from Lupe Fiasco’s extended Twitter rant to the eminently sensible response of El-P and Killer Mike, but the importance of one of rap’s brightest young stars bringing the idea of competition back to the front and centre of the hip-hop conversation should not be understated.

After keeping quiet about the whole incident for over two weeks, Kendrick has finally spoken about his verse in an interview with Power106LA that will air in full tomorrow morning. Listen to the young MC explain the “King of New York” lyric below.

“It’s not about actually being the King of whatever coast, it’s about leaving a mark as great as Biggie as great as Pac.”
