Did Joaquin Phoenix Actually Produce Pusha T’s “King Push?”

There has been a lot of excitement surrounding the (now redacted) fact that Joaquin Phoenix produced the stellar beat on Pusha T’s “King Push,” but unfortunately, that apparently isn’t the case. Despite what Pusha had stated in his interview with Vibe earlier this year, about how Kanye West added a few beats—one of which was apparently by Joaquin Phoenix—to My Name Is My Name, Phoenix claims something different altogether in his statement given to XXL:

While it was widely reported that Pusha T used my beat and that I produced his song, I can’t take any credit [...] A friend’s son played me his music, and all I did was make an introduction to Kanye’s camp.

So, whatever Kanye slipped in was not actually from Phoenix, but actually from his friend’s very talented son (from whom we hope to hear more). My Name Is My Name will be released on October 8.

Valid. But at least your parents still gave you presents. Let’s just hope we keep getting gifts from whoever really produced this.
