Premiere: The Neighbourhood – “Afraid (Chopped Not Slopped Remix)”

Everything The Neighbourhood does is in black and white—press photos, music videos, cover art, clothing, even their live television performances. It has become a calling card of the band and a testament to their sense of aesthetics, and it’s worked. But today, The Neighbourhood hits us with a remix by OG Ron C and something very different: purple. The band’s lead singer, Jesse, explains:

We always stick to the vision. None of our minds stray too far from black and white at any time. We’ve found a lot of comfort in it. It’s a way we’ve been able to find ourselves. Some people view it as a gimmick. A lot of people think it’s stupid, silly, or pretentious, but for us it’s a lot more than that. We started this unit together and through our contrast we’ve made a name for ourselves and we remain positive and loyal to one another. This is 100% who we are.

So when it came time to start reaching out to artists to do remixes it was kind of a weird idea to expand outside of our direct family. Then the idea came up about having OG Ron C take a shot at giving our record his Houston touch. We thought it’d be cool to have someone who, like us, made a name for themselves and their movement in their own way. No one told them they had to slow things down or make purple the color of their culture. They did it themselves. So now black and white is getting some purple mixed in. tThis doesn’t mean we are adding color to our vision. This is out of respect for Ron C and Houston for coming together with us on this collaboration. A lot of people won’t understand this, but for those who do… cheers.

This is why I love The Neighbourhood. To make a dedication for OG Ron C and their vision just amazes me. I didn’t think it was possible to respect these guys so much.

Don’t get me wrong, but this is one of the worst remixes I’ve ever heard. This remix is basically the same with just some added effects (pitch lowered, some nasty scratches and slow tempo). I really do love the original version though.

  • poonslayer69

that’s what “chopped not slopped” pretty much means…

  • fakeBaconator

Well everybody’s like “hey big ups! Nice job, cheers” and I don’t get why so much respect for this effortless remix.

  • tone

I agree. I love The Neighbourhood and truly do love and respect their vision and all of the decisions that they make. But yeah, honestly, it could have been done a lot better. If this was what they were going for then fair enough. Otherwise, I just wasted that (and this) time on this remix when I could have been listening to the brilliant original. Terrible remix in my opinion.

    Terrible remix. Sorry

  • penda

its not really something you understand unless you listen to DJ Screw and other screwed & chopped/chopped not slopped music, it’s not meant to be an EDM dance remix or anything like that

  • MrFlagmingo

So are you telling me Chopped not slopped remixes are meant to suck? What’s the point anyway? When I played this song I wasn’t even looking for some good EDM.

  • penda

I’m telling you there’s no point in assuming you “get it” and that it’s bad. Chopped and screwed music is a whole culture and it isn’t something everyone will understand or enjoy, there’s a lot more to it than you realize but if it doesn’t appeal to you it doesn’t appeal to you, that’s basically what jesse said anyways.

  • Melodie Davis

Yessssss loved this. So excited to see these guys at Terminal 5 in NYC on Thursday!

  • LaRon Foy

to both of you….the nieghbourhood used the song in their music video and they thought it was good so uhh, your argument far down the line of relevance.
farther down than the relevance of billy ray cyrus.

  • JordanOverton

I like the brief chopped version from the music video!

  • Guest

Loved this and love their new video for Afraid (and not just because I got to see the singer naked)

  • Christina

I have been reading various reviews about the remix and I think that it just is a different sound than what we are use to. But besides this remix, “Afraid” is GREAT song!

  • Ross CMR

Spin off website of theirs is pretty sweet. Interactive weather app got me prepared for any type of weather. Is it sweater weather in your area?

  • DanCMR

Dope remix. The guys did a cool interview on VH1 Big Morning Buzz regarding their music. Check it out!
