Is Beyoncé the New Death Grips?

beyonce death grips Is Beyoncé the New Death Grips?

A strange day indeed. Late last night, Beyoncé dropped a new album. Out of nowhere. In 2013, even indie artists can’t get around album leaks and the slow build-up of information and promotion leading up to a drop, but Beyoncé managed to put together an entire album (and accompanying videos) with almost nobody, even people in her own camp, being aware of it.

This strategy has a lot of people surprised, but it’s not a first. Death Grips has become notorious for surprising fans with albums and recklessly dropping material with no announcements or promotion. The thing that has people suspicious: earlier this year, Beyoncé was spotted hanging out with—you guessed it—Death Grips (and also Robert Pattinson, who is probably the mastermind behind all of this.) Whatever the case, Twitter is taking notice.

im not a fan of Death Grips and I’m an mediocre fan of Beyonce at best. It’s more important that Beyonce released an album with no notice than Death Grips because, well, it’s Beyonce.

It’s unheard of for someone of her stature to do something like this. Just like it was unheard of for Jay-Z to release his album they way he did for MCHG.

Death Grips and their fans can complain all they want but Death Grips never gonna be Beyonce, lol. If the traditional way of releasing an album is through promotion and etc, doesn’t that mean everyone is copying each other already? To say Death Grips has exclusive rights to this no-promotion-method of release is fucking stupid (I’m speaking to the idiots of the internet, in this case Twitter).

God damnit, P&P. You got me all riled up over nonsensical Twitter bullshit as usual. I don’t even post, i just lurk and here i am — I already lost getting mad at such nonsense haha.

    hehe

    fucking P&P

B and Death Grips are both awesome so this is basically a double dosage of dope…no pun intended.

  • Harold

    so tru

  • Crunch

hahaha what do these scrubs care she dropped an album in a similar fashion as DG? non-issue

  • Confusion

Ha. Well, first of all, it’s not bullshit. I know you guys are always gonna call bullshit, but we are trying to bring up points with this kind of shit. Is it more “important” because Beyonce is doing it? Yes, it has a much greater impact, but Beyonce is set for life. She’s good. If this whole strategy turns out to be a big flop, whatever. Death Grips did that shit at the expense of their record deal, and a lot of money.

And whether or not you think B took notes from Death Grips, it’s interesting that major label artists as big as Beyonce, or Jay Z, or Kanye, are looking to these non-traditional strategies to get attention.

Do you realize how little P&P talks about Beyonce. And now we’re covering it. We’re talking about it. We’re interested. Same for you. You’re a “mediocre Beyonce fan” and you’re on a blog commenting on a post about Beyonce.

I guess the point is: the music industry is weird right now. It’s crazy enough to see Beyonce in a pic with Death Grips. But to see her pulling a move like this? It says a lot about the state of things.Yeah, maybe it only works because it’s Beyonce. But that fact that Beyonce is doing it is the real point of interest.

Lil B’s marketing strategy is twitter tho. Beyonce didn’t even tweet about this. Your argument is invalid.

  • Confusion

The idea of Death Grips is powerful. Is wanting to like them a bad thing? I feel like people are quicker to dismiss “ideas” in music than in other forms of art. Not all art is supposed to be pretty and pleasing. If something is disruptive and makes you feel uncomfortable and it’s done sloppily and abrasively but there are still tons of people who want to “tell everyone else that they are fans,” does that not say something? Sure, maybe some of these people are just pretentious snobs who think the idea of Death Grips fits with their personal brands, but I really believe that most people see value in art for reasons, and sometimes that reason is more than “ooooh I like this song!”

  • Sergio

Risky move, yet it seems to be working out very well because of the number of sells the album already has and the number of people talking about it. Of course Beyoncé doing this is way more difficult and has more impact than when Death Grips did because she is a bigger artist (not necessarily better, just bigger). Besides all the promotion and “copying” stuff, songs preview sound pretty solid, so it may be worthy a listen to the complete album.

  • nevernotgully

I call it bullshit because of course Beyonce is going to get more recognition for it than Death Grips. Plus there are so many more facets involved than who did it first. Fortunately, Death Grips is inadvertently going to get looks cause of this (at least on some level). The people in those tweets are too butt-hurt for my liking or at the very least: no shit Death Grips did it before Beyonce, just like there are others who have released projects unannounced.

I don’t even know how it’s reasonable to question whether or not this method is useful to Beyonce or not. She sells albums based off her already established fame and success anyway. At this point, I think she and Jay-Z could make a joint album with just the lyrics being “Blue Ivy” repeated over and over and still sell a million or more.

  • penda

he also has a tendency to drop projects out of the blue with no prior warning and was doing it arguably before death grips even formed.

not saying beyonce was directly inspired by Lil B to do this, since the fact that the “video album” format along with a random drop are suspiciously similar to govt plates, but the whole “random internet drop” shit is a very lil b tactic, and definitely came up with him before

of course, Beyonce is a pop star so her doing it will have such a great impact that it doesn’t matter at all where the idea came from.

  • tam

props to death grips but i think it is WAY harder for beyonce to be able to pull this off. with her popularity and the amount of people involved in the production of her videos and music, it is surprising nothing leaked or was even hinted at before hand

  • XXX

I don’t actually understand if there is any point to what you guys are arguing about

  • firsty

Okay are we really playing the whole “first” game with artist? For one independent artist around the world release music everyday with zero promotion. The difference is that this is an established artist that took a completely untraditional route. Are we really acting as if ANY thing is original?

90% of Beyonce’s fan base has never heard of Death Grips.

  • poptoypop

Who gives a shit? I actually like Death Grips and Beyonce what does the marketing matter? It’s more people talking about her than ever…that’s the marketing.

  • poptoypop

Just love music….why are you all so caught up in the machine?

  • Brian Andrew Smith

it was not unheard of for jay-z to release MCHG the way he did. HE Did the same exact thing ten years ago when the black album dropped. If you bought this shitty nokia phone, it came preloaded with the black album.

  • guerillajones

the difference is most of the world doesn’t
know,or could care less about lil B.Beyonce alone satellites attention, not to mention shes half of one of the most powerful couple in entertainment right now,so its quit impressive.

  • penda

    yeah I agree with that

  • IsaishthomasVs DiegoSantana

go to youtube and type coa big i hands up comment and like or dislike

  • jus10

Funny how people are saying “risky” lol. She was already rich and her career is already set. So what would she risk by just releasing music around christmas time?? This is proven by the fact that she stays releasing garbage projects and they go supported by the masses.

  • NANCIF

who da hell are ‘death grip’? Some of those ‘tweets’ are so stupid and miss the whole point. never heard of them so them putting an album out like her means nothing except to their fans. And so what if she was influenced by their brilliant idea and did copy their strategy they both win cuz now millions of people like me who never heard of them before now know them and will go check out their music. Plus she was able to ‘freak’ it much better than they could ever do because of her status and who she is which made it more interesting and suprising than when they did it. Smart woman! Good Job Beyonce!

  • NANCIF

i like your comment and intelligence!! makes you sexy!! if you’re a man, that is! lol!
