Kanye West Speaks Out Against Grammy Album of the Year Snub

When the list of Grammy nominations was announced last Friday night, for many, one name was notably missing from the Album of the Year nominations and that was Kanye West‘s, for Yeezus. While performing in Phoenix last night, he took a moment to address his ongoing frustration with the Grammys saying, “And Yeezus is the top one or two album on every single list. But only gets two nominations from the Grammys. What are they trying to say?” He raises a valid point, as Yeezus came in at No. 1 on a huge number of year end lists, Pigeons & Planes’ included. Kanye was instead nominated for Best Rap Album of the year and Best Rap Song for “New Slaves.” See a fan-captured video of his comments above.

But Kanye isn’t the only one voicing his opinion about a Grammy snub. During a recent J. Cole show, a fan handed the rapper a banner she made with the words “Fuck the Grammys” written on it, which he held up for other concert goers to snap a picture of him with. J. Cole did receive a nomination for Best Rap/Sung collaboration with Miguel for “Power Trip,” however, Born Sinner was left out of the Rap Album of the Year category.

Honestly who really cares? People make a big deal out of the Grammy’s but that’s just the opinion of the committee at that awards show. Their opinion is given credibility but their opinions aren’t any more or less credible than anybody else’s. Why do people get so wrapped up in trivial shit like awards shows?

People get worked up because its sad, these people running the grammys are in a position where they are lucky enough to shed light on and award really good music on a commercial level, but instead of doing that they they fall to awarding awful mainstream music (and not all mainstream music is awful) and good competition is ruined.

Yeezus is only number 1 (on the internet) because people expect it to be. Bloggers care more about S.E.O. than actual content. It says that the online critical community is entirely up Kanye’s asshole. It says that the album really wasn’t as great as bloggers pretend, did not do as well as it should have financially, and failed to really chart any singles. Do you really think Yeezus was objectively better than Acid Rap, Run the Jewels, Old, Tangible Dream, Doris, or Watching Movies With the Sound Off….? Plus who gives a shit about the grammys.

  • uhhh

Who DOESN’T think Yeezus is objectively better than fucking Mac Miller’s album?

  • theartsnobs

people who listened to both OBJECTIVELY. Saying “fucking Mac Miller” implies subjectivity.

    lol

Like the saying goes, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Good music is subjective. This organization started years before you and i, and started by a group of enthusiast that wanted to award there view of good music. If i could i would do the same.

Alright, roasted, but Mac earned that after I gave a fair chance to his project and was disappointed as a fan of some of his shit. In terms of creativity, clarity of artistic vision, quality of the production (at every level), lyricism (brash as Ye’s was) or anything, I can’t see any case for Watching Movies over Yeezus. Or almost any album over Yeezus in any area other than his lyrics. But that’s just me/all those people who put him at #1

Nailed it. Kanye demands attention– most of the time by acting like an ass, and people eat it up. In my opinion his music has gotten consistently worse over the years and I’ve gone from being a big fan to someone who’s just tired of him.

You’re comment is dead on and in a lot of ways I agree with you, but at the same time I feel like I’m the polar opposite. to me, kanye is forcing his “artistry” down our throats when it’s not even that good. doesnt matter because people are going to listen at this point. I liked his album alright, but it was nothing special, especially considering the rest of his catalog. Watching movies with the sound off convinced me that mac miller is 100% worth paying attention to (especially when I thought he was a gimmick before), and the production list was wild.
