The Billboard Hot 100, as we know it today, debuted on August 4, 1958, after the previously separate charts (In Store Sales, Most Played by Jockeys, and Most Played in Jukeboxes) had been slowly phased out. For most of its history, the song that sits at the top of the Billboard chart has been pretty predictable.

Of course, some great songs have reached No. 1, but rarely are they ever surprising. The songs that do best are generally formulaic and adhere to a certain style. But every now and again, a song that you would never hear and think, "Oh yeah, that could be a big mainstream hit," hits top spot. With recent changes that take streaming (YouTube, Spotify, etc.) into account, it is likely that we will see more surprising songs at No. 1 in the future. But for the time being, here are some of the most surprising to ever reach the top of the Billboard charts.
