“God Bless the Robots”: Watch Zane Lowe Interview Pharrell About His Upcoming Album “G I R L”

With his upcoming album G I R L on the way, Pharrell had a brief interview with Zane Lowe backstage at the Brit Awards last night. Continuing to rock his “Gandalf hat,” Skateboard P explained how the album came to fruition and the inspirations behind G  I  R  L‘s name and focus.

So who do have to thank for Pharrell’s second solo album? First and foremost, women. Explaining his decision on the name and typography of his album, Pharrell said:

The reason why I named it G I R L in all capital letters is because when you look at it, it looks a little weird. And the reason why it does is because society is a little unbalanced…If I’m gonna make an album, then I need to make an albums says everything that I’ve ever wanted to say… And women have been so good to me over my entire career, and they’ve done so much for my family and everything that I’ve ever gotten is because they paid for it…so for me, I just thought that I wanted to analyze that for a second…I admire women in a lot of ways.

However, Pharrell is also quick to point out that Daft Punk’s influence on his solo career shouldn’t be discounted either. He told Lowe that, “I’ve said so much, but through other people, and I was happy with that. So when the executives at Columbia hit me [about making a solo record], it was just so overwhelmingly arresting.” Apparently, the Columbia execs had heard Pharrell’s songs on Random Access Memories before it was released, and were so impressed that they approached him about making a solo record. Basically, without “Get Lucky,” we wouldn’t have G  I  R  L. “God bless the robots,” Pharrell says.

God bless them, indeed. Pharrell and Lowe also use an extended sock analogy to describe Pharrell’s life, so make of that what you will. Watch the first section of the interview above, and the closing portion below.

G  I  R  L is set to be released on March 3 via Columbia.
