There are obvious similarities between directing movies and writing raps—storytelling, character development, powerful imagery—but the conversations sparked by hip-hop heads sound very different than the conversations between film critics. When you really look into it, though, the two aren't all that different. Take out a few key words from a Spike Lee movie analysis and you might think you're reading a Nas album review. Here's a look at other areas where the world of movie directors and rappers overlap. Here are 10 rappers and their movie director equivalents.

"My favorite movie was the Gremlins/Ain't got shit to do with this/But I just thought that I should mention" - Lil Wayne, 2007

    Accurate

  • xyz123

I think Kanye would’ve been better with Quentin Tarantino.

  • krossoverking

Uwe Boll gotta be my nigga, Lil B! Michael Bay is Lil Wayne (all theatrics, no substance) and Tim Burton is… I’ll come back to Burton.

  • Angel

    michael bay = rick ross
    quentin tarantino = kanye/

  • Travaun Whittaker

    Accurate as well

  • The goat

    Cudi = Nicolas Winding Refn

  • Randy Troy

Kanye = James Cameron, both push the envelope always trying to accelerate the craft. 808s = Titanic a.k.a a break from sci-fi/action tradition. Yeezus or even MBDTF could be related to Avatar.

  • Trey Allen

As a film lover, these are pretty fun p&p. Maybe do these more often??

And I agree, Ye shoulda been Tarantino.

  • Trey Allen

Fuck no. Cameron doesn’t push anything… his only exception was his gift to Aliens.

  • Trey Allen

I can see him as Burton. Dark, humorous, playful. Yet serious undertones.

Idk if anyone can relate to Kubrick … he’s too beyond

  • Randy Troy

Cameron doesn’t push anything? Aliens was great, but take the Abyss for what it is, that was the birth of modern CGI– which he fine tuned to perfection in the single greatest action movie of all time Terminator 2 and won 4 Oscars because of it. And the dude practically invented the modern 3D camera for Avatar. Me comparing Cameron to Kanye is a compliment to Kanye not the other way around.

  • wutangenerator

    Childish Gambino anyone???

  • El Camino

Kool Keith – ed wood / raekwon – john woo / madlib – melvin van peebles / tupac – hughes brothers / eminem – quentin tarantino / earl sweatshirt – david lynch / mf doom – guy ritchie / Rza – Rza

  • penda

    who is kubrick tho?

  • Red Gyarados

Woody Allen. His name is a bit controversial at the moment tho, so I can understand why they didn’t make the analogy.

  • Trey Allen

I still disagree. Terminator 2 the greatest action film of all? That’s your opinion. I can think of many more that surpasses that. Cameron depends on cgi & effects heavily. So, I see no correlation between advanced graphics & Kanye’s collision of art & hood influence. Kanye brought themes and fantasy into realistic terms. With each theme & intent, came a different sonic scene and yet they were techniques familiar with him. His sounds are immersed with emotions all in an artistic manner. If anyone, his would be Steve McQueen. They’re harsh yet lush & subtle at certain moments. My example would be the long steady attempt to escape strangulation. from the protagonist in 12 Years a Slave. Or the sexual and uncontrollable perversion that relates to Shame.

Then again, this is the beauty of art. A concrete perception isn’t expected.

  • Djincks

Quentin is more Eminem than this Bwahye

  • Mike

Eminem is probably timburton or Quentin…….
