TDE’s SZA has built up a lot of buzz in the walk-up to her next project Z, and it’s not just because of the crowd she runs with. Her See.SZA.RUN and S compilations marked SZA as one of R&B’s freshest and most experimental young voices.
She’s also part of a new wave of female singers (FKA Twigs, Kelela) who are building something that extends beyond music. In most cases, that means videos that are visually consistent and mesmerizing as they are unconventional.
This time around SZA treats us to a meandering striptease in the video for “Babylon.” She spends most of the video preparing for a lake dip, meticulously removing layers, allowing us some time with what is, at worst, a very impressive head of hair. That hair also provides one of my new favorite gifs:
Z is due out April 8. If your SZA itch has just begun to be scratched, check out her feature on Isaiah Rashad’s “Ronnie Drake.”
