Watch Chance The Rapper, Isaiah Rashad, and Vic Mensa in the XXL Freshmen Cypher

With the individual freestyles from this year’s XXL Freshman class in the books, the crew unveils the first of the cyphers today. The leadoff group features Kevin Gates, Vic Mensa, August Alsina, Isaiah Rashad, and Chance The Rapper, and the result is an expectedly entertaining clip.

Backed by a raw Don Cannon instrumental and DJ Drama on the boards, each of the four rappers offer impressive verses while Alsina—one of two singers to grace the 2014 Freshmen cover—laces the cypher with a melodic hook. We’ve heard Chance’s verse before (in “Home Studio”), but it’s still fun to see it spit live. Watch the video in full above.

  • marquee_

i don’t think you know what ramadan is

  • swingem

    seriously?

  • JayKnew

    Vic Mensa’s kinda annoying

  • tlombz

love isaiah and chance, vince is aiight, i liked it but almost everyone here disappointed me. isaiah didnt have a presence over this beat and well vic was pretty whack, chance was recycled but fuck it still a good verse. august was a nice touch and i kevin gates didnt really catch my atention sorry

  • Matthew C. Torres

Nah Isaiah Rashad killed it. Chance was dope though. Vic Mensa actually did a freestyle though.

  • Matthew C. Torres

He was defiantly the weakest. I didn’t know he rapped. haha Although he has the song of the summer… (down on my luck)

  • Baller.ina

eh lol I like it. I just got too excited and expected to be blown away

  • swingem

lets be honest, has chance done anything dope since the release of acid rap? honestly? …he has NO record that matters and the nigga is on everything. niggas just like the idea of him…even vic got a possible low key hit right now with his “down on my luck” song. lol…chance doesnt have SHIT right now.

  • RBS

What the fuck does that mean?

  • thedankthedark

Literally none of these rappers are that relevant except Isaiah, Chance, Vic, and Ty. They all sound the same anyways. Definitely one of the most disappointing years of XXL.
