Stop trying to get a record deal
Amir Abbassy: "Nuff Said. Just get your business, your team, your ideas and your vision straight. And network. Be genuine, not opportunistic. People can spot dishonesty from a handshake. Be hungry, but not thirsty. It's not a sprint. It's a marathon."
Time and time again, we've heard horror stories about artists getting lucky with a big single, signing with a major label, and disappearing into obscurity. Major labels are businesses, and in today's volatile music industry of quick hits and instantaneous results, most major label artists don't get an opportunity to properly develop.
Instead of rushing into a deal, develop yourself first. If it takes a couple of years, so be it—by the time you do sign with a major, you'll be ready. And you'll be in a much better position to negotiate for creative control, ownership, and whatever else you want from a partnership.
