It started with an innocent question. We were having our monthly (weekly? daily?) discussion about Kanye’s best album, and one pigeon wondered: is there a correlation between age and favorite Kanye album?
Things got heated when the question was posed to Twitter, and nearly 1,500 responses later, we had our answer—but it wasn’t what anyone expected. We thought there would be some correlation—the younger the respondent, the later in Kanye’s discography their favorite would be. As it turns out, almost every age range has the same favorite album.
So with some help from the art team at Complex, we illustrated the responses. With the data collected, we can see how many members of each age group chose an album as their favorite. For example, the graphic below shows that four 12-15 year old respondents said The College Dropout was their favorite album, compared to 37 16-19 year olds who thought Kanye’s debut was his best.
Our findings for each of Kanye’s seven solo albums, plus the collaborative albums Watch The Throne and Cruel Summer are displayed below. The final graphic shows what each age range chose as their favorite album.
THE COLLEGE DROPOUT
808s & HEARTBREAK
MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY
WATCH THE THRONE
THE LIFE OF PABLO
When all the votes were counted, a clear favorite emerged: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy garnered the most votes in almost every age category, with the exception of our oldest demographic, those aged 32+—they chose Yeezus. College Dropout also earned a “favorite” title for the 28-31 sector by tying MBDTF.
