El-P has always been a respected figure in hip-hop. The producer/rapper was one of the most creative forces in the genre with the forward-thinking Definitive Jux label, but with Def Jux calling it quits and the underground rap scene shifting into another animal thanks to the internet, a lot of the dudes that used to make up the independent rap scene fell off the map. El-P didn’t, and he’s possibly in his best position ever. With rap getting weirder, the environment getting more conducive to the acceptance his industrial sound, and El linking up with some of the most exciting newcomers in the game, things are looking good.

He’s announced his first album in five years called Cancer for Cure, set for a May 22 release date on Fat Possum. The album will include features from Danny Brown, Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire, and Killer Mike. Heard the first single, “The Full Retard,” below.
