Much buzzed about Brooklynite emcee Joey Bada$$ dropped his debut mixtape 1999 today, featuring the 17-year-old rhyming over a handful of borrowed beats from the likes of DOOM, Dilla, Lord Finesse, Statik Selektah, and KNXWLEDGE. Fitting backdrops for an emcee who seems indebted to a classicist take on East coast Hip-Hop. Thankfully, the sound defines his aesthetic without confining him–he mentions the omnipresent Based God on “Pennyroyal” and sounds sufficiently of-the-moment on songs like “Waves,” all with a flow evolved from the Native Tongues and the aforementioned Metal Faced villain.
At first listen, 1999 is a solid step from a young emcee with a strong set of influences and lots of room to blossom atop the shoulders of his favorite giants. Check it out below.
