When last we heard from Toronto-born emcee Tory Lanez, he was re-purposing Method Man’s “All I Need” as the basis for “Fourteen & 40’s,” a reflection on life in his home city. For his latest act, “Up (Fell In Love),” Tory dips a toe in the tried and true pool of conflicted relations and questions of love and lust.

While it may be well-trodden territory, Tory’s charisma, rapping and singing abilities, and production choice (the beat nicely balances atmospheric verses with the sort of anthemic choruses reminiscent of older records by The-Dream) make for something that’s radio-ready without feeling like a guilty pleasure. It’s simultaneously confessional and cold, the sort of record that would make a comfortable home for a Drake guest appearance. Give it a listen below.
