New York’s next generation of rappers will be led by Bishop Nehru. The 16-year-old prodigal son dropped Nehruvia four months ago and immediately drew comparisons to Joey Bada$$ and Earl Sweatshirt for his mesmerizing buttery flow. Now Nehru is back with strictlyFLOWZ, 10 tracks of be-bop ensembles passed through the twisted filters of producers like Raz Fresco and Afro Jazz.
Nehru’s beat selection, on the other hand, directly references the vibes of Wu-Tang and a touch of DOOM. But he updates their formulas to bring them into the 21st century, taking the edge off the mob mentality and creating a introspective vibe that makes the mixtape float by like it’s laid back in the current. He even has the attention of the Wu themselves: Nehru will be accompanying RZA and the squad on their 20th anniversary tour this summer, starting July 25th in the U.K.
