Sometimes, you receive press e-mails that force you to click play. When I read the following words last week, I was intrigued to say the least:

“Just wanted to send you over this remix of “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift. He really couldn’t have gone in a direction more different than the original version with this one, as this remix has the sort of chillwave feel more reminiscent of The Weeknd or SZA.”

A disclaimer: I wouldn’t recommend wantonly combining wildly different genres to try and get attention. Does it work some of the time? Absolutely. Is it a sure fire method for securing our eyes? No. Does it typically result in terrible music? Yes.

Luckily, producer APSPDR+¬†approached potential gimmickry with a measure of care and came out with something surprisingly well-executed and enjoyable, pitching down Swift’s vocals, laying it on a bed of atmospheric synths, and even throwing in a stellar Project Pat sample for good measure. I’m not sure I want to listen to his remix of “I Knew You Were Trouble” every day, but as a showcase of his airy production and a curiosity, it entertains. So…if you’ve ever wondered what Taylor Swift would sound like if she was actually the Weeknd, you don’t need to wonder anymore.
