J-Pop tinkerer and overall shoegaze wunderkind Meishi Smile is readying the release of his debut album, Lust. Due January 28 through Attack the Music and Zoom Lens, his debut was mastered by Japanese producer Yoshino Yoshikawa, and it certainly shows in lead single “Pale.” Ecstatically frothing with an unwavering sense of excitement, the Southern Californian’s latest makes a compelling case for his re-purposing of Technicolor junk. His stuttering style is wonderfully twee without relying too much on its own throwback qualities—the focus here is primarily on giving the listener five minutes of euphoric escape in a rainbow filled dreamworld.
