The newest single from Cambridge’s Farewell J.R, “Skin Pieces,” feels almost like a contradiction in terms, personal and grand at once. Building on a delicate vocal and a gradually swelling orchestral arrangement, Farewell seems to accomplish almost precisely what his press release boasts, capturing “the haunting darkness that can resound behind a moment of serenity.” Intricate and pretty, “Skin Pieces” evokes a sort of lucid, controlled sadness–not that a sense of wild grief, but rather a sort of clear-eyed melancholy. It’s affecting music that lends itself to drifting minds.
