With “She Wants” still spreading, Portland duo SOS (previously Shadows On Stars) drop another single from their upcoming self-titled album. So far, the direction has been dark and electronic, and “Dead Or Alive” fits the description. Reverberating guitar work recalls The xx, but there’s a little more muscle to the beat and a little less distance in the vocals.

The strength of SOS has always been their songwriting ability, though, and that’s what makes “Dead Or Alive” so effective. It’s dark, but there’s a youthful energy and a hint of hope here, and it’s all wrapped up in breathy production and a subtle but undeniably catchy melody. It’s a complicated vibe, and it’s what will make you keep going back to “Dead Or Alive” instead of getting tired of it.
