The Cold War Kids have released a third song off their upcoming album, Hold My Home. “All This Could Be Yours” and “First” are joined by the thunderous guitars and teasing patience of “Hot Coals.” It is, like the previous offerings, meticulously produced and has a crisp crystal sound. But rather than return to the grandiose tones and epic proclamations Hold My Home has promised thus far, “Hot Coals” heads in a slightly different direction.
The band instead summons memories of Franz Ferdinand and their earlier selves, especially with that sour-faced bass that arrives just at the end of the first verse. It has an edge that brings lead singer Nathan Willett’s signature yelp back to the front, right where it should be. Hold My Home will be released October 21.
