While new song “Surfer” is unlikely to convert those that aren’t already among the faithful, it marks another enjoyable entry in the catalog of Atlanta’s Lil Silk. There’s a certain kind of cleverness that allows a rapper like Silk (or, for an example of this skill turned into a legendary career, E-40) to not only get away with exploring the same topics time and again, but to actually wring enjoyment out of listener anticipation of old sentiments repackaged. “Surfer” sees him dialing back his manic energy while keeping his off-kilter way with words intact: “If you heard ’bout swag drippin’, Silk had slight involvement.”
At very least, it’s fun rap music. There’s a lot of bullshit in the world right now. Tune in and turn off for a second.
