I’ve written a lot about how important gritty, female artists were to me as a young woman growing up. They weren’t scared to write about how life actually is, messiness and chaos included, instead of painting some pretty but entirely false picture of it. Luckily, there’s been a lot of women in music lately that have revived this notion. I Am Strikes is one of these women.

At only 15, she taught herself to play guitar, uploaded a few videos to YouTube, and racked up some 40 million views. While YouTube stardom was never her aim, she used that as motivation to continue working diligently and in the years since, she’s recorded a handful of new material. This hardwork is culminating in her debut EP, Low Standards, and her new single “Bitches” is a taste of what to expect. The track is emotionally charged, with I Am Strike’s raw and passionate vocals taking center-stage. Says the singer of the song:

“I wrote ‘Bitches’ as a desperate anger anthem. There’s a common thread throughout – the desire to be desired and the notion that love is not always enough – however, the takeaway is this: the universe does not conspire in favor of fault. Those who have wronged will meet their match. In other words, karma’s a bitch.”

Low Standards is out June 23, listen to it below.
