The successes of a couple members of a team can overshadow its other players. Many TDE fans were afraid Jay Rock’s anticipated follow-up to 2011’s Follow Me Home had fallen through the cracks, what with Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q basking in a majority of the label’s spotlight since 2012.
The last ten months have mitigated those fears. “Gumbo,” the third single off Rock’s untitled second album, released earlier this morning. Produced by J.LBS and, as always, handled by MixedByAli, the record features rolling hi-hats, warped guitar plucks and swelling violins. The hook is a soulful earworm, so expect to hum that to yourself repeatedly.
