One of the highlights of our first-ever Open Mic Night was Pat RZL’s electrifying performance of “Melanin.” It was one of those moments that made the event worth it—the whole crowd immediately woke up and responded to RZL’s flow, and she threw the energy right back.

Today we’re excited to premiere the song in its finished form. The Brooklyn rapper says the song “promotes self-awareness, self-awakening, and self-love to young and old people of color… I want people to be able to listen, digest as well as turn up to the words that are being said.” The message carries weight, and RZL’s staccato flow keeps your ears trained on every word. Stunnah Beatz provides ominous production and a syrupy trumpet sample on the irresistible hook.

“Melanin” is off Pat RZL’s Food 4 Thought project, and has a music video coming soon. Stream the song—and check out the sleek artwork—below.
