As racial tensions in America—and around the world—begin to reach a boiling point, it’s become more important for people of color to break through stereotypes portrayed by the media and learn to love and embrace our differences. One artist who continues to keep his finger on the pulse of social issues is Mick Jenkins, and he’s never shied away from injecting these issues into his music.
For his latest track, “Sunkissed” Jenkins offers up an ode to people of color—tying together lyrics about a hard past and present with a catchy hook (“You love my style, you love my skin / that melanin, that melanin, that melanin”) by frequent collaborator theMIND that encourages listeners to feel good about themselves.
In his own words, Jenkins doesn’t “spit it with a filter.” He manages to deliver nearly four minutes of necessary truths for his listeners over bouncy production by Da-P that makes “Sunkissed” hard to resist.
