I awoke this morning to find my backyard, front steps, and the rest of Toronto blanketed in its first snowfall of the season. I shut off my alarm clock, and rushed off to write my first of two final exams for the semester, woefully dressed for the weather outside. While I shouldn’t have been that surprised that it would be so cold – the calendar on my cellphone was telling me it was December 7th afterall – it was still a rude awakening to say the least. For those of you missing summer, not to mention the backyard BBQs, pool parties, and late nights that came with it, The Death Set‘s got you covered. In partnership with Mishka New York, the Brooklyn via Australia electro-punk band recently dropped this mixtape entitled Artificially Sweetened, an excellently curated collection of old-school punk, classic hip-hop jams, up-and-coming garage rock bands, and more. An awesome (and eclectic – name me another mixtape where you’ll find Jackson 5 alongside the Beastie Boys and an audio clip from a Hunter S. Thompson lecture?) almost 45 minute-long mix, Artificially Sweetened features a laundry list of artists including Black Sheep, The Descendents, Devo, Fugazi, Japanther, The Misfits, Notorious B.I.G., Salt ‘N’ Peppa, Sonic Youth, Waka Flocka Flame, and others. In other words, its awesome and you head over to Mishka’s website and download it for free here. I don’t know why, but this mixtape reminds me of something that I’d listen to while cruising around on my BMX in the summer.

The Death Set’s second full-length album, Michel Poiccard, is due out this spring on Ninja Tune. Below you can hear the first song from the album, “Yo David Chase! You P.O.V. Shot Me In The Head”, which features world-trotting DJ/producer Diplo on synths.
