In case you’ve missed the flood of Sufjan Stevens’ odd Christmas music, let’s take Damien Jurado’s beautiful, orchestral “Kalla Hus” as an opportunity to remind you that we love¬†odd Christmas music–even when its angle is somewhere south of cheery.

“Kalla Hus” and its accompanying video explore a man’s life coming to an end in the context of his final Christmas. It’s difficult listening, comprising an arrangement that haunts and soars and painfully resonant lyrics, all before breaking into a jagged instrumental section that conjures the pain and confusion of loss. Jurado’s treatment of a difficult and potentially leaden subject is delicate and sincere, giving touching life to a topic we all fear and, at one time or another, all face.
